This call emphasizes a development-oriented approach, technology transfer, and addresses the concerns of developing countries, lessons learned from the pandemic being a significant factor.

  • Development Dimension and Technology Transfer: The submission specifically calls for the review to fully incorporate the development dimension. This includes addressing the technology transfer mechanisms to ensure developing countries have access to essential technologies, a critical lesson from the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Examination of TRIPS and CBD Relation: A key aspect of the submission is the push for an expedited examination of the relationship between the TRIPS Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The aim is to align the TRIPS Agreement with the CBD, especially concerning the protection of biological resources, traditional knowledge, and folklore to prevent bio-piracy.

India and Other Developing Countries' Stance

India, along with the other developing nations, has long advocated for amendments to the TRIPS Agreement to make it compatible with the CBD.
