Protect rights of accused in sexual abuse cases says petition

Why in news?

  • Youth Bar Association of India has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to protect the reputation and dignity of persons accused of sexual offences.
  • They contend that a person is innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law and a false accusation can lead to a loss in reputation that is in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution.
  • Disclosure of the identity of a such a person during trial would lead to media trial and could expose other details about them, violating their fundamental right to privacy.


What is a fundamental right?

  • Rights enjoyed by the people that allow them to live lives of dignity with equality and assurance of basic liberties required to live in civilization.
  • These rights are enshrined in Part III of the Constitution of India.
  • These are the fundamental rights – right to equality, right to freedom, right against exploitation, right to freedom of religion, right to life, cultural and educational rights and right to constitutional remedies.



Pre-monsoon rainfall sees 27% dip : IMD

Why in news?

  • Per-monsoon rainfall from March to April has recorded 27% deficiency according to Indian Meteorological Department.
  • The highest deficiency of 38% was recorded in UP, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.


What are pre-monsoon showers?

  • There are rains caused due to convectional rainfall during the late spring and summer months.
  • The sun shifts northwards across the equator and causes intense heating of land on the Indian subcontinent.
  • This intense heating leads to the rise of localized convection currents which lead to the formation of clouds and precipitation.
  • They are also called Kalbaisakhi in West Bengal, Mango Showers in Karnataka, Bardoli Cheerha in Assam and Cherry Blossom Shower in Kerala.
  • They help in the early ripening of mangoes,and often referred to as ‘mango showers’.


Cyclone Fani will not hit Tamil Nadu Coast : IMD

BCIM Corridor no longer a part of BRI Framework

Why in news?

  • In an annex tagged with the Joint Communique of the Leaders’ Roundtable at BRF, the Chinese Foreign Ministry website has not listed BCIM (Bangladesh -China- India- Myanmar) as a project under the BRI

South Asia is covered under three other major undertakings :

  1. China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC)
  2. Nepal-China Trans-Himalayan Multi-dimensional Connectivity Network
  3. China Pakistan Economic Corridor


What is the BCIM corridor?

  • It is a 2,800 km long link from Kunming in Yunan province of China to Kolkata in India via Mandalay (Myanmar) and Dhaka (Bangladesh)
  • It will be through a combination of road, rail, water and air linkages in the region.
  • This interconnectedness would facilitate the cross-border flow of people and goods, minimize overland trade obstacles, ensure greater market access and increase multilateral trade.



PSBs long term strategy on Jan Dhan accounts begins to pay off

Why in news?

  • Over the last three years, the number of Jan Dhan beneficiaries has risen from 22 crores to 35 crores.
  • PSBs stand to earn as much as Rs 5,000 crore due to increasing quantum of deposits placed in Jan Dhan accounts. This could be used to improve the financial position of the PSBs.
  • The total quantum of deposits in Jan Dhan accounts has grown from Rs 36,000 crore to Rs 98,400 crore
  • PSBs make up 72.% of the total Jan Dhan accounts and 89.5% of the total deposits. The bulk of the rest is made by regional rural banks.


What is a Jan Dhan account?

  • The Bank account open under PMJDY (PM Jan Dhan Yojana) does not require minimum balance. And overdraft facility upto Rs. 10,000 is also available after six months. Interest is on deposit. Free RuPay debit card for account. It is a no-frills account.
  • Person who does not have valid identification document can also open bank account. This type of account call “Small Account” , can regularized within one year.
  • Account opening and bank transactions are through business correspondent. Usually business correspondent appointed in remote rural area where bank branches not present.
  • Biometric based account opening and transaction are available through business correspondent. This helps illiterate people also do banking.
  • The government subsidies are directly transferred to the beneficiary. This reduces delay and leakage to get service.
  • Accidental insurance cover of ₹200,000 provides life cover of ₹30,000 payable on death of the beneficiary.


Social Media Fraud Rose by 43% in 2018 : Report

Why in news?

  • Report titled Current State of Cybercrime – 2019 by RSA security has found that social media fraud increased 43% in 2018.
  • The results suggest that cybercriminals are increasingly relying on Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and other legitimate social media and messaging platforms to communicate with each other and sell stolen identities, credit card numbers and other ill-gotten gains.
  • Fraud in the mobile channel has grown significantly over the past several years with 70% of artifice originating in the mobile channel in 2018.
  • Fraud from mobile apps increased 680% between 2015-2018. Rogue mobile apps that defraud consumers was on the rise.



Outreach by Government for delisting of controlled substances from trade portals

  • Government has shared a list of 400 items including narcotics and psychotropic substances to ensure their delisting from trade portals especially  B2B (business to business portals)
  • A report by the International Narcotics Control Board – INCB Report 2018 had highlighted the growing evidence of an emerging modus operandi of drug trafficking in the region that involves the use of the internet as a marketplace for drugs and precursors, with mail and courier services being used for delivery


What is the International Narcotics Control Board?

  • The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) is the independent and quasi-judicial monitoring body for the implementation of the United Nations international drug control conventions.
  • It was established in 1968 in accordance with the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961.


Electronics Exports Rise 39% to 8.9 billion USD in 2018-19

Why in news?

  • Electronics exports rose 39% in FY 2018-19 even as imports touched a record high of $55.6 billion.
  • The nature of imports in the mobile phone segment is changing with the purchase of components from overseas rising faster than those of completely built units (CBUs)
  • Exports of telecom instruments (including mobile phones) holds the largest share in exports in the electronics industry with a massive 129% year-on-year growth.
