Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) Exam Pattern

The Haryana Civil Services (HCS) exam, conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission, has three stages to test the candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Stage I: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

• Nature: Multiple-choice questions.
• Papers: Two compulsory papers –

Ø General Studies-I (100 Marks) and

Ø Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT – 100 Marks).

• Timing: Both papers are conducted on the same day in two separate shifts with a three-hour gap between them.
• Scoring:
• General Studies-I: Determines the cut-off marks.
• CSAT: Qualifying nature, requiring at least 33% to pass.
• Negative Marking: 1/4th of the marks are deducted for every wrong answer.

Stage II: Main Examination (Descriptive/Written Type)

• Papers: Four papers, each of 3 hours duration.

1.     English (including English essay): 100 marks.

2.     Hindi (including Hindi essay in Devanagari script): 100 marks.

3.     General Studies: 200 marks.

4.     Optional Subject: 200 marks.

Stage III: Interview/Personality Test (Verbal Nature)

• Candidates: Candidates thrice the number of advertised posts are called for this stage.
• Marks: The interview is worth 75 marks.
• Purpose: To assess the personality and suitability of candidates for a career in civil services.

Final Selection

• Total Marks: The final merit list is based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (600 marks) and the Interview (75 marks), summing up to 675 marks.
