in the Himalayas increased by 10.81% from 2011 to 2024.
There are more than 25,000
glacial lakes in the Hindu Kush Himalayas.
67 lakes in India have increased
in size by more than 40% and are considered high-risk for glacial lake
outburst floods (GLOFs).
The most significant expansions
have occurred in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal
Pradesh.
The National Disaster Management
Authority (NDMA) has identified 189 high-risk lakes and is taking steps to
reduce the risk. These steps include installing early warning systems
and automated weather and water level monitoring stations. |
